The Heart Beat Bed is a mixed-media interactive installation that creates a multi-sensory experience using sculpture, light, sound, volunteers, and audience participation. I made this piece for the 2010 Lotus House fundraiser, Heart Happening, at the Margulies Collection.
I replicated the experience of being in the womb by creating a peaceful environment for visitors to connect with the sounds and feeling of the heart beat. Visitors are invited to lie down on the bed, put your heart next to the ‘heart beat’, and reconnect with the rhythm of the earth. Within the beds themselves, there are speakers that pulsate to the beat of a real heart. While visitors are laying on the bed, I read them children's stories that my mother used to read to me.
The Heart Beat Bed brings about a feeling of safety, home, love, and profound peace mirroring the nurturing work done at the Lotus House Shelter.
