Pretty Pigeon Project

People in New York say pigeons are ugly—
But aren’t they just birds
Like any other birds
(and I hate birds)
that live in the city?

And if they are ugly because they are urban
does that mean that we
who live in the city are ugly also?

Why don’t we make pigeon pretty.

This is the ordinance: give the Pigeons back the city.
They perch on us like statues—
throw us bread when we look hungry,
snap their claws to our faint song.

In old Italian movies men curse a thing
and then it combusts.
They say, I never liked Milano
then an earthquake destroys the town.
A diving board trick.

I say pigeons are pretty.
They turn blue and begin to sing.
